CARNEGIE REDESIGN

(2019 - 2020)

BACKGROUND

In 2019, the Glen Eira City Council contacted RMIT to ask for help in redesigning their future market plans on a parking area and warehouse just behind the Carnegie Library. This project became the main topic for my studio in Year 3. In March 2020, in my 4th year, I was offered a chance to continue working on it as a design intern under my supervisor’s design studio at Threshold Design.

ASSIGNMENTS

The design studio was split into teams of four covering different areas of the project: (1) Laneway; (2) Warehouse; (3) Gardens + Flora; (4) Shades + Lighting; and (5) Graphics + Colours.

My team was assigned to Laneway, which will be used mostly as transitional space due to its confined area and its frequency of use by other people (e.g. deliveries, waste management, etc.).

During my internship, my teammates and I were assigned to redesign the space on the demolished warehouse.

PROJECT BRIEF

After we have been assigned our project area, each team created their own design briefs based on Glen Eira Council's project manifest. The Laneway team's brief is as follows:

  • Design a safer and more navigable laneway so people could use the market space even at night

  • Design a fence + gate system for the block owners who also use the laneway for their vehicles

  • Create a green space or wayfinding structure in the area to catch the attention of anyone who might pass by

STUDIO ROLE

During the studio, I was flexible in my roles as I volunteered to help everyone with their work. Here are a few things I did:

  • Volunteered to recreate the entire project area in 3D

  • Led the laneway design team in planning and design direction

  • 3D modelled and sketched laneway design iterations

  • Rendered 3D model designs from laneway and other areas

  • Rendered the final project image for presentation to council

INTERNSHIP ROLE

My role as a design intern was similar to my role during the studio, but the project's brief changed, the scope became smaller - from the entire car park to just the warehouse space, and now instead of 20 students, there were only 3 of us for the internship.

  • Sketched and 3D modelled design iterations for warehouse

  • Used Rhino to create a CAD 2D drawing of the plans

  • Picked lighting options for the market space's safety
